New network to develop next generation of medical breakthroughs

A new network that brings together some of Tayside’s brightest medical minds has formally launched in Dundee.

TayMed Connect will utilise expertise from the University of Dundee, NHS Tayside and industry partners to work collaboratively to develop solutions for real-world health issues.

By bringing together innovators and business, the partnership promises to bridge the gap between research and clinical delivery, allowing new concepts to improve outcomes for patients. The project has received funding by the Scottish Government through the Tay Cities Region Deal.

"Tayside forms a unique testbed for healthcare technologies,” said Professor Michael MacDonald.

“This area is home to the largest percentage of the population using the NHS as their sole healthcare provider. In addition, we have a long history of medical technology innovation, including pioneering keyhole surgery, combined with state-of-the-art facilities and expertise in medical technology transfer.

"TayMed Connect creates a unique network of expertise and facilities accessible to all medical technology innovators. Together we can create tomorrow's healthcare technologies.”

Formed through a strategic partnership between the University and NHS Tayside, TayMed Connect is unique in bringing together entrepreneurs, researchers, clinicians, with world-class resources and expertise.

Based at Wilson House, the facility features state-of-the-art clinical imaging equipment, a dedicated metal workshop to manufacture prototype technologies, as well as an in-house business incubator with dedicated laboratory space.

As well as facilitating innovation, TayMed Connect also benefits from the ability to validate new concepts and technologies in real-world clinical environments, courtesy of NHS Tayside. Partners from the University currently include the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification, Centre for Medical Engineering and Technology, Health Informatics Centre, Image Guided Therapy Research Facility.

Professor Colin Fleming, Director of Innovation at NHS Tayside and Co-Director of TayMed Connect, said, "TayMed Connect represents a significant step forward in how we approach healthcare innovation in Tayside.

“By uniting clinical insight with academic excellence and entrepreneurial drive, we are creating a dynamic environment where ideas can be rapidly translated into real-world solutions.

“NHS Tayside is proud to be at the heart of this collaboration, ensuring that innovations are not only clinically relevant but also deliver meaningful improvements to patient care.”
